Overview

Under the Education Sciences Reform Act of 2002, IES supports national research and development centers (R&D Centers) that are intended to contribute significantly to the solution of education problems in the United States by engaging in research, development, evaluation, and national leadership activities aimed at improving the education system and, ultimately, student achievement. Each of the R&D Centers conducts a focused program of research in its topic area. In addition, each Center conducts supplemental research within its broad topic area and provides national leadership in advancing evidence-based practice and policy within its topic area. More information on existing IES R&D Centers is available here.

For FY 2025, IES invites applications that address one of the following topics:

  • Improving Gifted Education
  • Using Generative Artificial Intelligence to Improve Instruction in Postsecondary Education (Postsecondary Instruction AI Center)

IES intends to fund one center under the Improving Gifted Education topic. IES intends to fund at least one Center under the Using AI in Postsecondary Education topic. IES may consider making additional awards to high-quality applications to the Postsecondary Instruction AI Center topic that remain unfunded after one award is made should resources permit. These plans are contingent upon the availability of funds and the scientific merit of applications as determined by scientific peer review.
