Research Grants Focused on NAEP Process Data for Learners with Disabilities

There is no FY 2022 competition for this program.

Through the Research Grants Focused on NAEP Process Data for Learners with Disabilities program, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) intends to support research projects that utilize data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) to improve our understanding of the link between test-taking behavior and performance.

Under the FY 2021 competition, IES will support research that uses the restricted-use data from the 2017 eighth grade NAEP mathematics assessment, including the NAEP process data, to examine outcomes for students with disabilities. Math achievement levels of eighth grade students on the NAEP are far lower for students with disabilities than for those without disabilities. In 2017, only about 9% of students with disabilities scored at NAEP Proficient or above (compared to 38% of students without disabilities) and 69% scored below NAEP Basic (compared to 25% of students without disabilities). The program is expected to generate results that will improve the future development and administration of digital learning assessments, identify needed enhancements to mathematics instruction, and highlight areas where further research is needed.
